Many baby boomers are, or were getting ready to, retire now or in the near future. With the downturn in the economy and 401K’s disappearing many may delay that retirement. The first time baby boomers are competing for jobs with people older then they are and people younger then they are. The money that this age group has saved for their retirement will not be enough especially for those who were self employed or worked for small companies with no pension plans. Baby boomers will admit that they indulge themselves more then the past generation. They can expect to probably live an additional 25 years after retirement. Most have not made any definite plans of how they will spend those years.
Baby boomers now have to compete in a world that is computer driven. Many of these people worked in factories and are not computer savvy. Employers are faced with hiring a person with experience versus someone who knows computer programs. Some companies are asking their experienced workers to gradually reduce their retirement years.
For those baby boomers still in their fifties it will be important to learn more skills, line up a second career, get involved with people to make contacts and increase your knowledge of computers. Over the hill is not what it used to be. People are working, traveling and enjoying life well into their 80’s. Make plans for your retirement years so you can appreciate them. They will live longer, but with today’s economy they will not have as much money to use.
